'Dawn' is at the time the sun rises. 'Dawn' is essentially sunrise. Sunrise usually occurs around 4am-6am depending on the season.

eg1. He woke up at the crack of dawn. (This mean he woke up just when the sun had started to rise. 'Crack' in the sentence indicates the first glimpse of sunlight shining through.)

'Somewhere near dawn' = roughly around the time that the sun rose(4am-6am). :)
