Hi Helen
I think this differs from country to country. In England, we still use the term 'sports day' to describe a special day of sports competitions at school, usually held once a year. google definition: 'an occasion on which the pupils of a school compete in various races and athletic events.' As far as I'm aware, regular sport lessons would just be referred to as 'sport' (I've got sport this afternoon).
