Which one is correct? 1. We'd better get there 10 minutes early so that we won't be late for the meeting. 2. We'd better get there 10 minutes earlier so that we won't be late for the meeting.

Both are correct. However, there is a subtle difference in meaning. The 2nd sentence has an extra implication of comparison. For example, you had a similar meeting before and you were late. This time, you should be at this meeting 10 minutes than the last time.

Hi Jacob, Early, and Earlier have two distinct meanings. "I will get up early" = "I will get up at about 5am,6am,7am" "I will get up earlier" = I will get up at a certain time, which is earlier than I have got up before" When we use 'early" we have no real indication of the time. When we use 'earlier' we will usually be comparing one time against another. I hope this helps.

This is kind of subtle...either works depending on the context. 10 minutes early - is in relation to the meeting time. Ten minutes earlier is in relation to a previous time of arrival (for a different meeting) or in relation to another stated time. For example: We'd better get there 10 minutes early so that we won't be late for the meeting. - Use this statement if you want to arrive 10 minutes before the meeting time. Ten minutes early is in relation to the meeting time. We'd better get there 10 minutes earlier so that we won't be late for the meeting. Ten minutes earlier is in relation to another time, either stated or implied. - Use this statement if you want to arrive 10 minutes before the time you previously arrived. For example you tried to arrive early once before, but you still ended up being late - so arrive 10 minutes earlier. Or, you might use this in response to another person's statement. For example, John states "we need to arrive at the meeting by 6:00 pm." To which you might respond: " We'd better get there 10 minutes earlier so that we won't be late for the meeting." I hope this helps...

Both sentences work but for different reasons. Sentence 1 is what most situations would require. Sentence 2 would probably have the context of a specified time that the speaker and interlocutor have arrived previously and discovered that its wasn't early enough to be on time for the meeting. Or perhaps Sentence 2 could indicate that the meeting start time is the time earlier than which the 10-minute arrival interval should happen. I hope that helps some. :-)
