What's the difference between 'desert island' and 'deserted island'? I assume both are supposed to mean an unhabited island. Why do some use 'desert island' to mean an inhabited island' and not an actual desert?

Thank you

look up the word 'desert'. It is a type of climate that has certain characteristics, whether its tropical or artic. "deserted" means there are no people there.

In the US, being on “a desert island” is a symbol of isolation. It’s a common colloquial expression. A dinner table conversation starter might be: “If you were going to be stranded on a desert island, what 3 books would you bring with you?” A “deserted island” would be more likely something to use in writing to describe an actual island.

Both "desert island" and "deserted island" mean an island that does not currently have any inhabitants. (They both mean that there are no people on the island). Desert island usually means a hot, sandy island without people. Deserted island could be a cold, windy island or a hot, sandy island where people used to live but don't live anymore. I have met Americans who do not use the phrase "desert island" to refer to an island without inhabitants, they tend to use "deserted island". However, in the UK this is a common phrase and we use it far more regularly than the phrase "deserted island".

Desert Island is like a island with no one on it. Desert Island - a remote uninhabited tropical island. Desert - abandon (a person, cause, or organization) in a way considered disloyal or treacherous. Deserted island is a island with no human inhabitants. 🌅 Deserted Island - A desert island, or uninhabited island, is an island, islet or atoll that is not permanently populated by humans. Uninhabited islands are often used in movies or stories about shipwrecked people, and are also used as stereotypes for the idea of "paradise". Deserted - (of a place) empty of people.
