Yes. But then I read your last sentence. It made me think of the difference between "let down" and "take down". The word -LET- means: allow, enable, permit. So, your sentence, "take down the vase from the shelf" is correct. This makes me think more of the word: let. If you are holding a little bird in your hand. Someone asks you later what happened to the bird. You could say: "I let it go".
