Good teachers or persons with English their language, I am glad to thank you in advance due to my queries ( which are in reality related two simple sentences) 1a. I wish I would spend next weekend at home. 1b. I wish I spent next weekend at home. 1c. I wish I was spending next weekend at home. 1d. I wish I was going to spend next weekend at home. Which is grammatically correct? 2a. I wish he would own a car (now? or then?). 2b. I wish he owned a car (now) . 2c. I wish he had owned a car (then). Question: Which is grammatically correct?

1a & 1b would generally be considered poor grammar, although there is a rare use case that could make these phrases justifiable, so I won't say they are strictly incorrect, I'll just say they generally appear to be poor grammar based on first impressions without seeing the full context of the conversation. For more classical grammar suitable for formal situations and minimal confusion, consider starting with "I wish I could" or "I hope I will" / "I hope to" depending on what meaning you are aiming for. 1c = OK 1d = OK 2a = OK 2b = OK 2c = OK

Here's my opinion on these: 1a. I wish I would spend next weekend at home. NOT GOOD. It may technically be okay grammatically, but if so, it doesn't make sense logically. WOULD makes it sound like it is under the control of the speaker, so why can't he just do it--he doesn't have to wish. If you replace WOULD with COULD it would be fine. 1b. I wish I spent next weekend at home. INCORRECT I think you're using a past or present conditional to refer to the future. 1c. I wish I was spending next weekend at home. GOOD 1d. I wish I was going to spend next weekend at home. GOOD - same meaning as 1c. 2a. I wish he would own a car (now? or then?). NOT GREAT - I think this is technically grammatically correct, but it's rather unnatural. There may be rare circumstances where this sentence is appropriate, but generally 2b is much better and more natural. 2b. I wish he owned a car (now) . GOOD 2c. I wish he had owned a car (then). GOOD

For present/future wishes → I wish + past simple / past continuous / was going to For past regrets → I wish + past perfect *Use "would" only for other people's willingness, not your own actions or states like owning something. Hope that helps! 😊
