Is ‘To be going to’ formal or informal? I’ve seen this phrase in every English grammar books, student’s books, and English teachers and tutors teach this phrase. Yes, she's correct. In a formal paper, such as an academic book or article, you would not use "going to." However, it's perfectly fine to use it in most situations.
