How many hours do you work in a day?
I work at least 10-12 hours in a day . I think it is what I am used to. I know that it depends on a lot of factors such as the difficulty of your job, the salary , even your culture or work environment matters.
In Asian countries like Japan and China, it is normal to have 12 or even 14 hours of working schedule. I found that it is different from South America or Europe.

How many hours do people in your country work? What factors do you think affect those numbers? Is it about culture or individual preferences? Maybe both..

In Arab culture, people tend to work to live and not live to work, which is to say that people tend to view work as something that needs to be done and gotten out of the way. In Kuwait, public sector jobs (which I believe are more reflective of the local culture as opposed to global market forces) are 7:30 am to 2 pm, and most people actually leave before 2. I’ve asked people why they like 7:30-to-2 jobs as opposed to 9-to-5, and the usual answer is that they prefer to get work out of the way to get on with the rest of their day. People expect to have a social life throughout the week and not just on weekends.

What you’ve said about Asian countries has given me perspective on some of my relationships. I have some Asian friends, and they tend to work way more than I do. I don’t see them regularly, and I can only ever see them on weekends. I like to go out all days of the week. I finish my work in the afternoon then get on with the rest of my day.

I love my work, but I need to have a life outside of it. I’m a very driven person, and one of my goals is to be able to do work that I want to because I want to, not for the money. I seek to minimize the amount of work I need to do, to be able to maximize the amount of work I want to do. I am an artist, and I want to have the freedom to pursue my art as a creative endeavour and not worry about money.

I aim for 4 hours of work a day, but I do often work more than that doing more creative work. I also have creative endeavours outside of my work and like to dedicate time to pursue them as well.

One of the worst thing in all of this is that working more than 8 hours a day you do not have enough time for improving your professional competence, you stop going up and this means you are falling. Many employers claim that they ready to pay for skills development but in fact, they do not want even to reserve a bit of time for self-improvement not to mention payment of courses. Therefore working 10 hours you also must find a way how to stay on top.

I work mostly 2 to 4 hours around 4 days a week. Then three other days I work between 4 and 7 hours. I am happy with this amount of work.

That really depends upon the work. As a freelance online tutor, students come and go some weeks I work for 4 hours per day some day for 11 to 12 hours. This week I had to work for 12 hours. The thing about working as a freelancer is your life and work blend into each other until you cannot separate them.

Taroh, have you ever experienced not having enough work to do? That is almost worse than having too much work and not enough people, in my opinion. If you have too many people, or not enough work, then you end up with no motivation to work quickly. I find that very demoralising :/

At least when you are busy you have something to do! What do you think?
