TRAU - CAU STORY
Belong
ing to our tradition, “trầu - cau” is
a very important offering in
the wedding
ceremony. Trau is a kind of leaf which has
a heart shape
and peppery taste. Cau is a kind of fruit which looks like
a coconut and
grows in bunch
es like coconut. But it is much smaller than coconut and has
an acrid taste. And one
other thing,
called voi
, which is white and looks like
<strike>as</strike> wet flour. People eat trầu cau with voi together wh
ich when mix
ed has
a nice red color
but without
a good taste. However, when you usually eat them, you can be
especially attract
ive ??? At wedding
s, Trầu – cau is used as a
n important gift because the story tell
s about their origin.
This is our story: “Formely, there were twin
<strike>s</strike> brother
s. They loved
to be together so much because their parents had died
when they were very young. They were taught by the old teacher and they lived at his house
, as his children. When they became adults, both of them also loved the daughter of their teacher. She
was a beautiful girl and very
healthy. It was difficult to choose
between the older brother
and the younger. Finally, she decided to
<strike>get</strike> marr
y <strike>with</strike> the older because she loved him so much. Although the younger loved her so much, he tried forgetting this feeling and saw her as a sister – in - law, day by day. One day, when he was
drunk, the older brother’s wife thought
he was her husband and cared for him. After that, he knew that he couldn’t give
up his feeling
<strike>up</strike> and
neither could he give
up his lov
e….he decided to leave
their home and go
deep into
the forest.
Neither <strike>of</strike> his older b
rother
or sister – in- law,
or anyone else knew this. He
was forced to go further and further
, so he walked all day without stopping
even for a short while. Coming to
the bank of river, he
was completely worn out and the
re was no boat on the rivert. He sat
on the bank of the river and died
from hung
er and thirst
<strike>y</strike>. His body became a large stone.
The older
brother came back home from the farm while his younger brother
was running away. He was amazed
when he recognizing his dear brother had gone away. Being deep
ly disappointed, he started
<strike>away</strike> looking for his brother. Although, he loved his wife so much, he
chose to leave their home. He walked…..and walked
as far
as he could
, until he came to the river
bank.
There, he felt very tired and couldn’t
cross the river because
there were no boats. He sat b
eside the large stone and heard his brother’s voice
in the wind. He was
so worn out that he died and became a high tree which stood b
eside the large stone.
During that
time, his wife
<strike>still</strike> waited for his
return day by day. Finally, she also started off to find him. She
continued until
she also arrived at the side of the river. She was already exhausted. Sitting by Cau tree, she heard her husband’s voice. She died and became a kind of creeper which twined around the tree.
When living people in this area took leaves of the creeper, fruit of the tree and the flour from stone and combined them together – this mix is really special. They think that it
is maybe
a product from loving so they use it in wedding
s until now.”
Nowadays,
<strike>al</strike>most people don’t eat trau – cau but they are rolled extremely important in wedding ceremony. We believe that trau – cau is the thread to link loving in new family.
