Lost Soul
The train rattled to a start It means shaking, and perhaps making a noise. In this instance probably the engine was shaking a lot.

I don't understand your postings. If you are asking a question, show that you are asking a question. You can do this just by writing what you think and then adding "Am I right?" "Rattling" refers specifically a noise. The rattling is the noise. The shaking is the cause of the noise. A common baby toy is called a rattle. The baby shakes the rattle. We can say "the rattle rattles." That is, it makes a noise. A rattle is the kind of irregular noise made when something has loose parts, and shaking it causes them to hit against each other. A rattlesnake is a kind of poisonous snake that warns or threatens by making a rattling noise. In the old days before modern car body construction, cars were held together by bolts, many hidden inside the body. In old cars, some of the bolts would often come lose, and make a rattling noise. Part of the car body that should have been tightly joined might rattle against each other. I assume the same thing was true of trains.

Yes, that is the correct meaning. The engine also probably didn't start very easily. Hope this helps.😊
