How do you use
I never know when to use 如何 as opposed to 什么。
Example sentence:
Is it more formal?
From what I can tell, 如何 and 什么 are generally not used in the same circumstances.
1."I learned how to communicate with peoples of different cultures, from different countries."
Here 如何 can mean "the way to deal with" or "how to deal with"
another example,我该如何面对这次挑战?(equals "我该怎么面对这次挑战?",whereas ”怎么" is relatively informal and usually used in oral, 比如说,"又堵车了!
2. What do you think of Ang Lee's new film "Life of Pi"?
Both of them above express the same purpose to ask your views about the moive.
(1) What about going out for lunch?
Either is OK.
Thus, "如何"and "怎么样" can also be uses as simple proposals.
3. 什么 is normally used when you want to ask about a spacific matter,
"发生什么事情了?" what happened to you?
What is hindering you on earth?
4. in some ways,"what‘s the matter with you?" can be translated as "你怎么了?" rather than"你什么事情了?”.
I wish these would help.

Generally, "如何“=”how to (do) sth" in English. But in sppken Chinese, we usually don't say "如何“ a lot, in stead of using "怎么” or something else. “ 如何" is mostly used when you are writing articles.
