Why is stroke order important? I keep reading everywhere that it is very important to write in the right strike order, but rarely they explain why. The only explaination I found is here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroke_order : "writing characters should be economical, with the fewest hand movements to write the most strokes possible" it says, but while I can figure out why for chinese, I struggle to see that for Hangul. Take for example ㅁ, to me it would come natural just using the same trait for the whole figure, as if you were drawing a square, but instead it needs three separate strokes. Or ㄷ, I would use a single stroke for this one as well, like you do with a C (of course minding the corners) but instead it requires two strokes.I know the article is abotu chinese characters, but that's the one I could find, and I suppose Hangul carried it from the chinese writing system. Sorry if this may seem like a dumb question.

I think stroke order is important to learn because it is meant to make things easy, logical, uniform, and attractive. My mom is learning Korean too and she asks me this same question. I really do think it helps to learn properly. Once you become more adept at handwriting in Korean, it's okay to deviate somewhat, but I still think that letters will generally be drawn the same way. For example, in the US, school children learn the proper stroke order for the Latin alphabet. Since we are just learning, it makes things easier. As we get older, we may deviate from this. However, I still think that most people write letters in a few common ways. If you try to make it easier by doing it some other way, it may actually make it harder and more difficult to recognize. The shape is important. So I will repeat, /learn/ the proper stroke order and /practice/ it. Once you become /more confident/, I think it's safe to /deviate/ a bit. But please make sure it still looks proper^^ Please note this image: http://www.handwritingforkids.com/handwrite/manuscript/alphabets/images/tguideu.gif We learn the official or proper way. It does not mean we MUST write exactly that way forever. But even when we write differently, all of us write letters similarly.

And if you write ㄷ as C, it is difficult to make rectangular like ㄷ.
