Echar de menos I know that "echar de menos" means "to miss," but I was wondering if it is a dialectical idiom. I had a Mexican friend who was going away for a few weeks, so I told her "te echaré de menos" and she asked why. I was not expecting "why," so I asked her to translate and she said that I wanted to "make less of her." Then I told her that I would miss her. She said that I was mistaken and should've said "te extrañaré." I did not know what "extrañar" meant, but I remembered hearing it in a song and could figure out that also translated as "to miss." Nevertheless, I knew that I was not wrong and insisted on my phrase. I looked it up in a dictionary and showed her that I was really saying that I would miss her. She conceded and asked what kind of Spanish it was. I went with Mexican because I first learned it in a book translated by a Mexican immigrant. But she really never heard it before. So I was wondering if anyone knew if only some places use "echar de menos" before I use it again.

Yes, in Spain the most common way to say "I miss you" is "Te echo de menos"

latinos or whatever you want to call them, they use " te extraño" instead of "te echo de menos"

i think "te echo de menos" is used in spain "spanish people".

Usually "te echo de menos" is used in Spain, but it´s also used in other countries , so have that in mind when talking to people from other countries. Because every country in latin america doesn´t use the same words,so saying in latin america is like this(....) is inaccurate; every country is different. This is interesting if you say "Te extraño" to someone here in Spain , they´ll give you a weird look, so "Te echo de menos" is standard here. And it happens the opposite in other countries. Hope it helps.

Hi, Slater! Both are okey but in Latinoamerica we usually use "Te extrañaré" or "Te voy a extrañar" instead "te echaré de menos" or "Te voy a echar de menos". Espero haberte ayudado! If you have another question, dont hesitate to contact me. ¡Saludos! :)
