no, there is even difference among the azores islands, and huge ones inside Brazil, example, in some parts of the south of Brazil they speak a kind of old Portuguese, people from azores are responsable for that. Santa catarina state is a good example, but both, Azores and santa catarina, they received portuguese emgirants from others parts of Portugal, as minho. Azores has some influence from french, normands, and even from flemish, some azorean surnames are not portuguese ones. But that depends of the islands, and the same influence appears in some parts of Portugal as aveiro, for instance. Normands and flemish they went as cruzades, they help also in the "discoveries". Another main help was from genoveses. They also was inclunded in the first colonization of Brazil. Well, as you can notice is hard, ehehe, historical thing. but in short we can find some similarities, in some parts of brazil, but in general not. Brazilian Portuguese the common is fom rio and sao paulo.

Gina, as a portuguese from Portugal I'm in conditions to answer you :) Actually, in the world I think there are three big groups of countries that speaks portuguese: african group (mozambique, angola, cabo verde...), brazilian group (brazil) and european portuguese (Portugal and islands of Madeira and Azores). there are differences in the pronnounciation between the groups, lots of terms and expressions specific for each group which makes that sometimes you won't understand but it's perfectly normal you just have to explain what you mean. However, if I go to brasil or angola or madeira...they will always understand you, the roots are the same. In pronnounciation this is what happens: the african countries sound almost like Portugal. Brazilian has its own pronounciation and Azores and Madeira are slightly different from Portugal. This is because of emigrants! Azorian people emigrated to USA and Canada in the 60's and they have always been under influence of USA. You know In island Terceira, there is a USA base "Base das Lajes". About the french part, indeed, when we started colonisation of Azores in 1432, some french people have gone there too! So you conclude: 1)Brazilian can't be compared in pronnounciation with any other country that speaks portuguese. 2) French people helped in colonisation of Azores but more recently USA have more influence. 3)Portuguese language is understandable in any couuntry that speaks it despite the fact that there are some local expressions. Mrs Gina, Portuguese is Portuguese if you wonna to make the diferences accentes on Portuguese try the CPLP Portuguese Comunity of the Portuguese Language and you see all the countries in the world that speak portuguese! Try to listen an English Person from scotland, Liverpool or try to listen a spanish people form Vigo and catalunha and you see that is diferences in the accent like that is in the Portuguese and In my opinion all languages of the world! And Iam in Azores there is no similar but is Portuguese! Try on youtube search Rabo de Peixe and Alentejanos! and you see the accent :-)! Peace
