Learn with Yu Zhe

Been learning with Yu Zhe for 2.5 years now and it's impossible to comprehend how far I've come in my Mandarin! Going from incoherently speaking small sentences to having full conversations for an hour is an incredible feat only possible with an experienced and caring teacher. I'll be back in 2026 for more lessons (and you should, too!).

I’ve been studying Mandarin with Yu Zhe for about 10 lessons now and would definitely recommend him. He tries to meet the student where they are at, and he alternates well between structure (having a plan for the sessions), and pacing (slowing down when needed). Because I am probably at an intermediate-low level of proficiency, we are working through a textbook. This gives me the additional support I need for studying on my own time and our lessons are the time for me to ask him any questions and to practice conversing based on the material. I have felt consistently challenged in his lessons as learning Mandarin is not easy for me, and have appreciated his balanced strictness with grammar and pronunciation and consistent reassurance that I’m making progress towards achieving my learning goals. I plan to continue taking lessons with Yu Zhe and, if you’re reading this to get a sense of whether you should try a session with him, too, totally think you should. :) 加油！

宇哲是個很好的老師，很喜歡上他的課。我們討論生詞的時候他會舉例子，幫我更了解呢些生詞的用法。 Yu Zhe is a great teacher. I like taking his class a lot. When we were talking about new vocabulary, he gave lots of good examples.

I speak Chinese at an advanced level and have had many different Mandarin tutors in my life, both in the USA and Taiwan. Yu Zhe is an exceptionally skilled teacher. He wastes no time during lessons, attends to student needs always, remembers past discussions and lesson content, and is very good at balancing between having a conversation and correcting your mistakes. He is efficient and thorough. To anyone looking to take their Mandarin to the next level, I would gladly recommend Yu Zhe!

Today we practiced grammar and vocabulary terms using situations from our daily lives. It was a very productive lesson, and Yu Zhe also helped me with a plan to incorporate more Chinese language media into my daily life.
