You might know the Chinese term 朋友 is the perfect translation of “friend”, but do you know the separate meaning of the two characters? The reason why I mentioned that is because there’s a big difference between them. Anyway, let me explain it in more details. 朋 refers to a group of people who share the same goals, sometimes same beliefs, mainly their benefits and profits are related. They normally come from a same organization or party. So due to some same or close purpose, they stand together. Since they don’t have to be friends, I personally describe them as just “in the same boat”. 友 along the lines of friend’s definition. If a couple of guys are 友, they have interests on the same subjects or devote themselves to the same thing. Due to that, they like each others much all but don’t have to know each others well. Nevertheless, I feel like it’s weird that the two characters combined as “friend”.

Maybe you have seen many people around you didn't like their jobs very much, but can't change anything. They studied really hard as students until they chose their majors without thinking a lot. Most of them never carefully thought about the relation between their future career and the majors they have chosen. Many of them found that they didn't like their majors after entering universities, even if they had the top scores during the National College Entrance Examination. I have heard a excellent student who got a very high score to get to the greatest university in my country, but he didn't like his major. He just wanted to be a doctor, so he decided to learn the medcine after graducating from his university. Meanwhile, some peers have learned the medcine for four years. It sounds really terrible! So, how to plan your career is the most important thing in your life. If you turn your hobby into a career, I think that you definitely like your job. If you like your job, you definitely try your best to do it better without feeling tired. If you do your job well, you will definitely prove yourself. We always hear that hobbies are always the best teachers for everyone!

My motivation for learning a new language comes from my desire to communicate with people in that language. The more specific people I want to connect with, the stronger my motivation becomes. Currently, I am learning Persian, English, Arabic, and Turkish. Regarding Persian, I am learning it because I want to communicate with my Iranian friends and professors. I want to understand their thoughts and express my own opinions accurately. Although I’ve been studying Persian for 12 years, I’m still not fully satisfied with my skills. I often can’t completely understand what my professors say, as there are always a few words in their sentences that I don’t know… 🥹 In Japan, students start learning English in primary school. When I was a child, I had English classes once a week starting in the fourth grade. I was interested in English, so I joined private English classes after school as well. However, I didn’t have many opportunities to use English in daily life, and eventually, learning English became just about getting good grades in school. Now, I’m learning English because I want to share the outcomes of my research with researchers around the world and connect with people globally. However, my old habit of focusing on test scores sometimes interferes with my motivation to truly learn the language. Even though I don’t have any English exams to take now, this habit still affects me… 🥹 Learning a language has no set end goal. As for Arabic and Turkish, I’m learning them for my research, but I don’t have as much passion for them. Right now, it feels more like a duty than an interest, so I’m searching for something that can reignite my motivation to study them.
