Ollie Gamblin, 33, from the UK, and Lavinya Scholl, 35, from Germany, met in 2017 while cherry picking in Tasmania. Their mutual love for adventure took the pair all around Australia together — and seven years later, it took them all around the world, even earning them a Guinness World Record.
The pair recently became the youngest duo to circumnavigate the world on a motorcycle while riding pillion — which means one person driving and the other riding on the back. They visited 39 countries across five continents, riding 75,000 kilometers in 589 days.
"We wanted to see the world!" Ollie told us when we asked what their inspiration for the trip was. The idea of trying for a Guinness World Record came from the couple's friend, who had attempted a similar challenge.
"It made a good structure to the trip, a mission that we could aim for," Ollie added.
Beginning in London, the pair headed into France and Spain before crossing over into Morocco. They then rode south to Senegal before shipping their bike to Brazil.
The journey wasn't without its challenges — one being the pair's lack of motorcycle experience.
"We always go by the phrase 'learn by doing,'" Ollie told us. Reflecting on an oil slick that nearly sent them off a mountain road in Peru, he added: "Sometimes we truly believe that we must have had angels watching over us."
One of the biggest highlights for the pair was the generosity shown by the strangers they met, including an occasion in Nicaragua where a local man repaired their bike for free.
After riding around the bottom of South America and all the way up to Canada — stopping in Las Vegas to get married — they flew the bike to South Korea.
They then traveled west through Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, then through nine more countries in Europe to get back to the UK.
