German/English Anyone with advice on learning russian?

So,

I'm a native german, partially luxembourgish guy and I speak german, english and french fluently.

Not so long ago I decided to learn russian but I don't know how and where to start other than that I learned the Kyrillic alphabet. Let's face it, without it I doubt I would have any success.

I agree with Thomas that the ideal is to find a speaking partner, but as for myself I'm not sufficiently committed. Besides I'm hesitant to pick up a casual acquaintance on an Internet chat room, as one doesn't have a single clue as to whom is on the other side at the keyboard. If I were more committed I would probably have signed up for evening classes at a local language school in my town, a beginner class. As it is now, I'm only interested in a passive knowledge and grammar books aren't so fun to work with.

I am in the same predicament. I have an old school book, I work through one lesson after another. I plan (in case you can talk about a plan, it's rather drifting into a happening) to expand my vocabulary up to maybe 200 or 400 words through casually reviewing the chapters in the old schoolbook, and watch children's videos on YouTube. You can see my efforts on my Notebook, I'm on lesson nine.

As for German I learned how to read it by taking one year of German in school, and then pushing through - as it were - the book "Ganz unten" by Günter Walraff, with the aid of a dicitionary. It was talked about that year and I happened to have it only in German. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganz_unten
