Would you rather be overrated or underrated?
I met two kinds of people in my life, some are underrated and some are overrated. I met some people who were extremely talented and yet they never got a taste of fame or they failed to acquire public recognition. I prefer to listen to the music of underrated artists, those who are extremely talented and yet would not make it to the top 100 of billboard music ranking. I also know some underrated celebrities who are extremely good looking and intelligent but fail to acquire a lot of followers because they are not relatable enough. In my country,”relatability” is an important aspect to gain recognition. That is why “mass appeal” is essential. Someone can be excellent but if he or she does not appeal to the masses (general public), then it is going to be more challenging to gain a following.

There are also what I call “overrated” artists. Those who may gain a huge following even if they are not exactly as good as what people see them to be. There are a lot of music artists who sold millions of record albums but when you listen to their voice, they sound like Mickey Mouse.
It is because the entertainment industry is not always about talent but it is mostly about having the right packaging.

Being underrated or overrated is something that we can apply in almost all aspects of of life, whether it is music, food and even people.

Definition: The definition of underrated is something that has not received the merit, recognition or praise it deserves. A movie that is really very good but that no one really pays attention to or praises is an example of an underrated movie.

I would rather be underrated. That is why I wanted my discussions to be different, to appeal to a few. I have always been the type who would focus on the quality and the value of things rather than the quantity. It is because if your brand appeals to everyone, it's not unique, it's generic.

Florian, isn't it predictable that people will give you the reply you have so far received, that they would prefer to be underrated, and isn't it the case that their expressed preference is frequently false, made in order to conform to social expectations of modesty ?

And isn't it also the case that, on a mundane level, it is standard to overrate one's abilities when making a job application or when bidding in a competitive selection process. I don't often hear of people who are concerned about the consequences of finding their exaggerations unmasked. We all want to succeed, whether we deserve to or not.

Who is going to admit to wanting to be overrated ? Yet, when this does occur, as you recognise it frequently does, at least among 'celebrities', do the beneficiaries acknowledge it ? If we were honest, would we not admit to wishing to be overrated, or is this only a trait of exhibitionists ?

I would rather be underrated and appreciated by a few than overrated and controlled by the public. Underrated people can usually be themselves; they don't have to worry about pleasing the masses. Overrated people always have to be 'on', and that has to be draining.

It is better to be underrated with a high quality than to be overrated with superficial goals.
I think sometimes people gather the two quality and quality in their achievements but of course they are little.

I'd choose to be underrated.

If I am underrated, I can do things knowing it is not people just giving me a free pass. What I do isn't based off of false premises. People are not just giving me false approval for those things.

I would know it is based off of the ability and skills I have been given that the things are achieved. I am not just doing things that others are wishing they did and placing themselves in my body to fulfill their desires.

I think the golden middle is to be evaluated adequately. But I think to be underrated is better than being overrated. At least for me. If someone underrates my professional skills or my prospectives in sport or my English skills etc, it is just a challenge for me to prove myself and others that it is wrong and I can do it. So I think to be underrated is good motivation for strong people to become better. I remember one Russian
biathlete, who was not taken in Russian team for Olympics game and then she participated as representative of Slovenia and won golden medal. Good example of being underrated.
