when do you write konnichiwa this way: 今日は and when do you write it this way?: こんいちは I've heard people tell me it was written one of these ways and others tell me otherwise, I've also seen it written in notebook entries both of these ways. Are these both correct? Are they both used in different situations or are you supposed to write it one way? If you're supposed to write it one way, then which way are you supposed to write it? Thanks.

technicaly both are ok, but usually it is writen using only kana こんにちは。 That is because 今日 can be confused and by default read as きょう today. 今日はりんごを食べた。 today, I ate apple

"konnichiwa" is the greeting at the daytime. like a say "hello". yes, both is the correct.. but we usually use hiragana, when write that word..こんにちは because, "今日は" has the other reading.. its "kyou wa".. its meaning.. "today".. so when you write the greeting, "ohayou" "konnichiwa" "konbanwa" at that time.. just use hiragana..おはよう こんにちは こんばんは like that...

There is no rule when you use one and when another. You can write it however it's easier for you. People simply prefer to use hiragana to kanji overall, because in most cases it's much easier. Kanji is considered to be writing system of better educated ppl, but hiragana is more popular among younger folk who can't be bothered to learn all those kanjis
