1) "Rather" can mean "instead" or "instead of" Examples: "I decided to get the blue shirt rather than the red one." "I don't think I'll go to school today. Rather, I'll stay home and play!" 2) The word "Rather" can also be used to indicate a preference Examples: "I would rather go without dinner than eat leftovers again" "We would rather die than give up our rights" 3) "Too" can mean "also" Examples: "I want to go too!" "Because the girl was sad, the boy was sad too." 4) "Too" can indicate excess Examples: "I have too much work to do." "He couldn't count all of the books in the library because there were too many."

Rather is comparing one thing to another. For example: "I would rather clean the car than clean my room." "I'd rather go to school than own a cat." -- Rather could also mean "quite" or "somewhat". "My father found a rather expensive car yesterday." "That tie looks rather colorful." "Our conversation was rather complicated." -- Too can be used as "also" or "additionally". "I'm coming to the movies, too!" "She was unhappy, too." -- Too can also mean "overly" or "excessively". "There's too much water in the cup!" "It's too risky to do." "School is too hard for me." Hope this helped!

Rather is used for choices. Too is used to add or include something. Would you rather pet kittens or watch a movie? I want to pet kittens and watch a movie too. Would you rather work or play golf? I'd rather golf, but I have to work. We are are going to movies. I want to go too! Too is also used as an adjective to show excess. The coffee is too hot to drink. It's too cold outside, I need a coat too. (The cold is excessive, so I also need a coat ) Rather is also sometimes used help describe things. The coffee is rather hot, but it won't burn your tongue. In this case rather means "to a certain extent", to some degree The coffee is somewhat hot, but not enough to burn you. Hope this helps!
