what is "emparedados" and in which countries have you heard this word? I'm learning spanish from this site and another and was told that "emparedados" is another word for "sandwiches" but nobody in my spanish social circles has ever heard of this word. Is this a highly specialized kind of sandwich like tortas are in Mexico? or is it a word only used by certain economic circles? or is it only used in one country?

We don´t use emparedado in Spain. You are right, is some kind of sandwich. I think is used in southamerica. In Spain we prefer to call them sandwich when is made with "soft" bread (pan de molde) and bocadillo when is made with normal bread (maybe french bread in your country)
