A resume is a summary of who you are, your education and what might qualify you for a job. A profile is more general - less specific. It can be an outline of who you are (quick view) or it can be something like an introductory webpage - like we all have here on Italki.

A profile is a simplified version of your resume. It also lists your salary preferences, how much you are willing to travel, the type of employment you seek (full time, part time, etc). A resume is a shorter, more focused account of your relevant skills and achievements. Although the exact length of a resume is open to debate, in general it should not exceed one page in length. You should only include the things that are most relevant to the position you are targeting. Resumes also often miss out some of the more personal details that CVs include, such as hobbies and interests. An individual can create several resumes for different positions or different companies as per the requirement of job.

A resume has to detail only your best achievements so that the institution that you're applying to (either a job or a college or whatever) sees only your best qualities. A person looking at your resume only considers you for what you have done. Profile is more informal than a resume. In the profile you can speak about whatever you want that describes you for the person that you are.... it's more friendly. :) More commonly used for social networking websites, you can talk about anything from your hobbies to the kinds of music that you like, and you can also put up a picture of yourself. :)
