I think the song is about not knowing what happiness is in a romantic relationship. She says happiness hit her “like a train on a track" and "like a bullet in the head", which sounds like she wasn’t expecting it (or maybe wasn’t used to being happy?). She's maybe had a difficult time (a string of bad luck relationship wise) and when happiness finally came she just didn't know what it was. So she tried to run from it, hide from it, even started drinking to try and get rid of the feeling. But the "dog days [were] over" and things were about to change for the better. Since she didn't know what happiness was, she felt the need to run from it. She’s trying to run away from this thing she doesn’t know (a happy romantic relationship) and run towards something that’s more familiar (like her family). She's leaving behind this confusing feeling to run towards the people (and feelings) she does know. Well, that's what I think but I could be completely off base. I really do like this song though. =D

Sounds like an alcoholic. With every bubble she sank with her drink.... ....gives the game away. The girl can't kick the habit and screws up her life, despite the fact that happiness comes calling. There are thousands of people living like that, usually blaming this, that and the other for all their problems. I've met a few.

"The dog days" in the song are the terrible things in life that happen and traumatize us, and at some point you have to let go to move on and change your own future: allow a person to love you and be happy, (life doesn't have to be loveless) "Run back" run back repair the damage. The future is bright with the horses coming.

Hi you need to give people thee lyrics first if you want an answer Happiness hit her like a train on a track Coming towards her stuck still no turning back She hid around corners and she hid under beds She killed it with kisses and from it she fled With every bubble she sank with her drink And washed it away down the kitchen sink The dog days are over The dog days are done The horses are coming So you better run Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers Leave all your love and your longing behind You cant carry it with you if you want to survive The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? Because here they come And I never wanted anything from you Except everything you had and what was left after that too, oh Happiness hit her like a bullet in the head Struck from a great height by someone who should know better than that The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? Because here they come Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father Run for your children, for your sisters and brothers Leave all your loving, your loving behind You cant carry it with you if you want to survive The dog days are over The dog days are done Can you hear the horses? Because here they come The dog days are over The dog days are done The horses are coming So you better run

Dog days are the days enslaved to addiction the hiding "around corners and under beds"... the denial of having a problem... trying to hide from the spiritual awakening required for Recovery "tipped away down the kitchen sink" are words almost cliche for ending the drinking/drugged life The happiness (spiritual awakening) comes after the days of withdrawal & working a program hard - 'Running fast' for your loved ones... ''...leave all your love and longing behind" is about the requirement to let go of everything in the quest to recover - let go and let god they say... common talk in various spiritual pathways and 12 step programs
