Hi ! I have a question about the idioms; call it a day/call it a night. After a google search you can understand the general meaning which is to stop doing what you're doing because of tiredness , etc, And about their usage , it says the day version is for things such as finishing working , and night version for finishing leisure activities at night and going to bed. Right?! My question is ; How about people who work night shifts, or finish working not at regular time, Can they say ,let's call it a day, when they finish work at 10 p.m. for example? What if they finish work late, but go out with their friends after ward? call it a day or night?!🙄 I finish work at 9 p m. where I live it's considered night all year round at 9 p.m. if I say let's call it a day when before stop working ,is it natural to your ear? And one more question, some jobs have a fixed ,strict schedule, you finish working at a certain time because you have to, it's not optional, is it natural to use , this idiom in such cases. I'm a teacher, my students know better than me when to start or finish the class, it's not acceptable for them or my boss or even me , to finish the class earlier than usual ,even if we're tired, or we have done enough work, I mean EVERYBODY knows when it's gonna finish , isn't it silly or strange to use the idiom in such cases. I'd appreciate it if you could take time reading my question, and share your experience with me. I agree it's a long question, but Google is our friend but it's not so enough for me😅

Hello~ I am a native english speaker 1. If you finish working at night shifts, it still makes sense to say “lets call it a night” because it is night time. 2. If they finish work late and go with friends afterwards, they can still say let’s call it a night because it is night time. 3. I think let’s call it a day is more acceptable in the morning/afternoon time to use. Lets call it a night is used in night. 4. It is unnatural to use this idiom if your schedule is fixed. I usually hear this expression when you are let off earlier than usual. 5. My teachers sometimes end class earlier than usual which is the only reason they would use that expression. For instance: “lets call it a day, class. You’ve done hard work today. I’m letting you go early.” It would not be used if class is ending at the expected time. That would sound strange.
