I am an American polyglot of Jamaican descent. My passion is African languages and I have achieved fluency in Swahili and working on fluency in Lingala, Wolof, and Twi. I started using italki around 2021 when I was searching for people to practice speaking Swahili with. After completing over 350 hours of fully spoken Swahili I more than met my goals of being able to speak Swahili for hours on end without the need for English. Although I now aim to teach others Swahili, I will always consider myself a student of this language.
Tôi với tư cách là giáo viên
As a teacher I would like to spread my passion for Swahili and help students reach their goals and be able to speak Swahili with confidence. I like to focus on getting the student to understand the "why" in what we say rather than just memorizing and repeating. May of my lessons with revolve around "ngeli nomino" and using it to create deeper meanings of our sentences which will allow a student to jump from speaking like a child to expressing oneself like an adult.
Phong cách dạy & bài học của tôi
My style is flexible but as I self taught linguist I will show the tricks that I learned along the way to learn Swahili from an American perspective. In my opinion the best way to remember and build on our language skills is to use the language. I will not use an approach where the student just learns vocab or random sentences but rather we will continue to build on our previous lessons all with the aim to SPEAK Swahili.

While I have not had the opportunity to have many lessons with Mr. Ekevu (I have had to prioritize other things), I can tell any prospective learners of Swahili that he is a fine teacher. For example: in the short amount of time that we worked together, he assisted me in understanding certain concepts that I had failed to grasp during my (attempted) autodidactic studies of Arabic, and such an ability to instill understanding in one's students must certainly be desired by anybody seeking to learn a language!
I will say, however, that he has a preference for Microsoft Teams, which may not be suitable for some viewers. Over the course of our classes, this method of communication proved itself to be unreliable, as I was booted from the meeting several times, delaying the instruction somewhat.
I had a class with another teacher who used Zoom, and he and I faced no difficulties in speaking to one another. I wasn't booted once!
