My students quickly learn to ask me ‘can I say…? (voinks mä sanoa…?)’ followed by something they have just formulated. Before long, they start to create perfectly applicable and natural sounding Finnish sentences (which can often be short and make absolutely no sense when translated to English) by applying Finnish the same way Finns do.
