Welcome to the American English Pronunciation Guide. My name is Trevor Kafka, and I am your host.

There are many different varieties of American English. I was born and raised in New York, which has given me General American English pronunciation. The English that I speak has 15 vowel sounds.

Today, we will talk about the vowel sound number 2 of 15: /eɪ/ grey day. This vowel is what we call a diphthong, meaning that it’s really two vowel sounds smooshed together as one. The mouth begins very open when the sound begins, but then turns into a smile as the teeth come together.

8_Plastik – SEGEN ODER FLUCH?

(A)  In den 60er Jahren hielt Plastik Einzug in den Alltag der Menschen. Hatte man eine Tragetasche aus Plastik ergattert, war man glücklich. Sie war HALTBAR, leicht, wasserdicht und man bekam sie – es war einfach unglaublich – kostenlos im Supermarkt. 
(B)   In den 80er Jahren begann sich das öffentliche Bewusstsein zu ändern. Plötzlich HIESS ES, dass Plastik ein GEFÄHRLICHES Umweltproblem darstellte. Die Menschen begannen sich zu fragen, was eigentlich mit dem leeren Joghurtbecher passierte, nachdem man ihn in die Mülltonne geworfen hatte. 
(C)   Heute wissen wir, dass Plastik BEI ALLER NÜTZLICHKEIT ein problematisches Material ist. Verbrennen wir es, erzeugen wir GIFTIGE Dämpfe. Werfen wir es auf die Müllhalde, dann liegt es dort Hunderte von Jahren bis es zerfällt. Es kann auch im Ozean enden, wo Meerestiere es verschlucken und QUALVOLL daran sterben. Recycling ist auch eine Möglichkeit, allerdings ist das aufwendig und teuer.
(D)   Es existieren einige vielversprechende neue Methoden zur Lösung des Problems. Die beste Idee ist aber, Plastik nur dann zu verwenden, wenn man es wirklich braucht.
