Description
According to data from the World Food Program, nearly 20% of all food produced each year is wasted or lost before it reaches our tables. This adds up to about 1 billion meals going to waste every day. Wasting food is not only costly but also harmful to the planet. Growing food requires a lot of land, water and energy, and these resources are all wasted when food is thrown away. Also, food waste in landfills produces harmful greenhouse gases. In fact, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, food waste accounts for up to 10% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. And cutting global food waste by 50% by 2030 is a key goal of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). So it's clear that food waste is a huge problem, but what can the average person do to help? For a start, several apps have been created to help reduce food waste, one of which is called Too Good to Go. Restaurants, cafes and bakeries create a "surprise bag" — a collection of surplus food items that would otherwise be thrown away because they're close to expiring — and advertise it on the app. Although users can't choose what goes into their surprise bag, the food in the bag is much cheaper than it would usually be. Too Good to Go was founded in 2015 in Denmark, as a solution to the large amounts of food that were being wasted at buffet restaurants. Many big stores now list their surplus food on Too Good to Go, such as Starbucks and Burger King. And the app's founders say their users have saved over 330 million meals from going to waste. So while dealing with the issue of food waste may seem overwhelming, there are steps we can all take to make a difference.
