おはようございます。日本語だんだんポットキャストのゆかりです。

きのうは、
東京都(とうきょう)、
神奈川県(かながわ)、
大阪府(おおさかふ)の人口の話をしましたね。

ところで、
この東京都の「都」
神奈川県の「県」
大阪府の「府」

と、けん、ふ、とちがうことばですね。

英語では、
Tokyo,
Kanagawa Prefecture,
Osaka prefectureと言います。

でも、日本ではprefectureは県(けん)や(府)といいます。

たとえば、
Hiroshima prefectureは、広島県(ひろしまけん)
Fukuoka prefectureは福岡県(ふくおかけん)
といいます。

京都と大阪だけ、とくべつです。

"県"ではなく"府"といいます。

京都府(きょうとふ)、大阪府(おおさかふ)ですね。

なぜ県や府があるのでしょうか？

Writing is a great PROCESS - an exercise where you can use your English - anywhere, anytime, without a teacher or a listener. So getting in the HABIT of writing or speaking to yourself is as important as the words you use. Over time, your skills will improve!

*Note - In this episode, I make the mistake of using the word "American" to refer to people from the US. This is a bad habit that I am (still) trying to break. The truth is that we are all Americans in the whole hemisphere - North and South. But, as they say, "old habits die hard" or existing patterns are hard to change.
