In today's episode, we learn why it's wrong to say that the food was 'very delicious', or that the weather was 'very freezing'. The reason is all to do with the fact that some adjectives are GRADABLE - we can make them stronger or weaker by using intensifiers such as 'very' or 'fairly', for example 'she's very pretty' or 'the weather is very hot'. But other adjectives are UNGRADABLE, which means that they're already at the very top (e.g., 'amazing') or the very bottom (e.g., terrible). But how do we stress these adjectives, if we can't use 'very'? Learn how in today's podcast, and manage to avoid one of the most common mistakes made by students of English.

雨女（あめおんな）

先日（せんじつ）、私は箱根（はこね）に行った。箱根は神奈川（かながわ）県（けん）にある国内（こくない）屈指（くっし）の温泉街（おんせんがい）だ。残念（ざんねん）なことに、私は雨女なので、旅行（りょこう）に行く時はよく雨が降（ふ）る。当日（とうじつ）も例（れい）に漏（も）れず、雨が降っていた。

大雨（おおあめ）が降る中（なか）、箱根湯本（はこねゆもと）駅（えき）から宿泊（しゅくはく）する旅館（りょかん）まで歩いた。途中（とちゅう）で旦那（だんな）と箱根まんじゅうを食べたり、晩酌（ばんしゃく）用（よう）のお酒（さけ）やおつまみを買ったりした。旅館に到着（とうちゃく）後（ご）、貸切（かしきり）露天風呂（ろてんぶろ）に入ったのだが、この時の雨はなんだかとても美しく思えた。雨と木々（きぎ）の香（かお）りに包（つつ）まれながら入る温泉（おんせん）は、なんと清々（すがすが）しいことか。いつもなら憎（にく）いと思う雨も、こんな日には悪（わる）くない。

こんばんは！Atsushiです。
今回も函館旅行の続きについて話しますね。

今日は人気の観光スポット2つについて、話します。


① 函館山

函館の街を一望できる函館山。
ミシュランガイドブックに三つ星としてのっているようです。日本の夜景の中でも人気があるようです。

個人的な楽しみ方としては、朝に行くことですね。夜景が人気なので、もちろん夜に行くのが1番良いと思いますが、人が多いのが好きじゃない人は朝に行くことをオススメします。朝早くはほとんど人がいませんので、ゆっくり見ることができます。標高334mと山としては高くないですが、街から急に高くなっているので、街と比べると風もあり寒いです！あったかい服を用意して行ってくださいね！


② 五稜郭

1864年に完成した、はじめての西洋式の城塞(じょうさい)です。江戸時代までの城の形とは全く違い、フランスの建築を勉強した人が考えました。江戸から明治へと時代が変わる最後の戦争の場所として、歴史的にも特別な場所です。日本の歴史が好きな人にとってはとてもおもしろい場所だと思います。ですが、紅葉の時期はもちろんきれいですし、桜の木が沢山ありますので、春もとても良い場所だと思います。

個人的には、ゴールデンカムイというマンガの舞台としても出てくる場所なので、とても興味深い場所です。
