Hello and welcome to another episode of Engine English! Every language has its own idioms and expressions and the English language has plenty of phrases that are useful to learn. Idioms are words or phrases that aren’t meant to be taken literally and usually have a cultural meaning behind them. Most of the English idioms you hear are offering advice but also contain some underlying principles and values. You have probably heard some of them, especially in TV shows and movies, and wondered why you can’t understand these idioms even though you fully understand the words. Learning English idioms and expressions can take some time but there are some of them that are more popular than others that will come in handy if you know them. みなさんはトルコの飲み物といえば何か思い出しますか？
日本人にとってはたぶんトルココーヒーのイメージが強いです。
テレビなどの影響かもしれません。


実際にトルコに来ると、思っていた感じと違います。
トルコの人は毎日トルココーヒーではなくて、トルコの紅茶、チャイをのみます。

みんなが毎日、チャイを飲んでいます。
カフェに行けば、ほとんどの人が会話を楽しんでいます。
そのテーブルにはチャイがあります。

コーヒー、ラテは飲んでいる人は少ないです。
トルココーヒーを飲んでいる人はもっと少なくです。
トルココーヒーは完全に観光客向けのような感じです。

実はデータ上でもトルコは紅茶の国です。
お茶の消費量が世界一だそうです。
だいたい1人あたり1日に5杯ほど飲むそうです。
昨日トルコ人から聞いた話では、その人は毎日30杯！ものチャイを飲むそうです。

彼はチャイを飲むとリラックスできるよ、と言っていました。

日本人にとってのお茶はそのような存在とは少し変わってきたような気がします。

トルコのチャイが根づいているのを見て、そんなことを感じました。
