Chinese Idiom Stories 5: A slow sparrow should make an early start(笨鸟先飞) I want to use this idiom to describe me. I’m not smart enough, but I am willing to pay more efforts. This idiom comes from Western Han. There was a man called Yueyangzi, he had a virtuous wife. One day, Yueyangzi picked up a piece of gold. He happily gave it to his wife. However, his wife told him,” The man who having a noble aspiration is strict to himself. Taking that picked up things home damages his reputation.” Yueyangzi was deeply ashamed of it and returned the gold back. Then his wife suggested him,” You are not smart like a slow sparrow, you need an early start. You should go out to study.” And Yueyangzi followed. But after one year, Yueyangzi came back because he missed his wife. His wife took him to the side of loom , and said,” This cloth was woven inch by inch, it became a roll after days and months multiplying. If I cut it off right now, it will come to naught. Studying is the same as weaving, it can’t give up in the halfway.” Yueyangzi was deeply moved and go out to study again. He never returned in 7 years. Chinese Idiom Stories 5: A slow sparrow should make an early start(笨鸟先飞)

I love this story! And you did a great job telling it! I made a few changes that are highlighted in yellow:

There was a man called Yueyangzi; he had a virtuous wife. One day, Yueyangzi picked up a piece of gold. He happily gave it to his wife. However, his wife told him,” The man with a noble aspiration is strict with himself. Taking that picked up things home damages his reputation.” Yueyangzi was deeply ashamed of it and returned the gold back. Then his wife suggested to him,” You are not smart like a slow sparrow; you need an early start. You should go out to study.” And so Yueyangzi did.

But after one year, Yueyangzi came back because he missed his wife. His wife took him to the side of the loom , and said,” This cloth was woven inch by inch, it became a roll after days and months multiplying. If I cut it off right now, it will come to naught. Studying is the same as weaving, you can’t give up in the halfway.” Yueyangzi was deeply moved to go out to study again. He didn’t return for 7 years.
