She ran as if she ________ wings on her feet. A. had B.has C.has had D.is having Is there a correct answer?I just feel like the right answer should be had had,but there isn't. By the way,it seems that wings normally grow from one's shoulders. It doesn' make sense.😂

The answer should be "had". If the sentence was in the present tense, you could've used ,"She runs as if she has wings on her feet." Another point on the whole wings on the feet situation. :) In ancient Greek mythology, Hermes, the god of messengers, had wings on his feet so that he could deliver his messages quickly. So the expression isn't exactly unheard of in literature.

The correct way to say it would be "she ran as if she HAD wings on her feet." The beginning of the sentence uses the past tense of the verb "to run" (she RAN) so you need to match that tense in the second verb (HAD - past tense of the verb "to have). If the sentence had said "she RUNS..." you would then have to match the present tense and say "as if she HAS wings on her feet". You're right that the sentence is strange, though! Normally we would say something more like "she ran as if she were a cheetah" or "she ran as if she were being chased". As an extra note: For most sentences that you could say "had had" you can usually just remove one of them as it sounds better. E.g. I had had a bad cold that week, so I didn't want to go out. This sounds bit weird, so instead you could either say "I'd had a bad cold that week" (and contract the first "had") or just "I had a bad cold that week".

Letter A - had If you would thoroughly analyze the sentence "as if" explained that " she ran like she had wings on her feet". Which I can picture out in my mind, that the subject(she) ran so fast. That made the speaker say, as if she had wings on her feet. as if = like 🙂
