The dictionary meaning of OVERWHELM is to BURY or submerge. For example, a town could be completely overwhelmed by the flood waters. Today, however, the word, overwhelm, is often used to describe emotions. For example, you could say, "She was overwhelmed by the kindness shown to her. She was very touched by her friend's generosity". The word OVERPOWER means to SUBDUE or make someone or something powerless. For example, the policeman overpowered the criminal. He easily knocked him to the ground and tied his hands". Hope this helps

Let's look at sentence 2 first. 2. He was completely overwhelmed by her dazzling wit and charm. 'Overwhelmed' in this context means that her wit and charm affected him in a strong emotional way. In this context the feeling is very positive but in another it could be negative. For example: My friend was overwhelmed with anger when he found out that his brother stole his money - he was extremely angry with his brother. 1. He was completely overpowered by her dazzling wit and charm. 'Overpowered' in this context means that she was able to defeat him in some way by being more powerful than him with her wit and charm. Here is an example sentence with both words in it. The boxer was overwhelmed by all the shouting of the audience that it allowed his opponent to overpower him by using this opportunity to punch him repeatedly and eventually win the fight.

Hi, Nanako. The words "overwhelm" and "overpower" have many different senses (meanings) and they can be used in various contexts. Let's examine them! :) overwhelm verb overwhelmed; overwhelming; overwhelms Definition of overwhelm transitive verb 1: UPSET, OVERTHROW The tornado overwhelmed many mobile homes. 2 a: to cover over completely : SUBMERGE The city was overwhelmed by the flooding caused by the hurricane. b: to overcome by superior force or numbers The city was overwhelmed by the invading army. c: to overpower in thought or feeling overwhelmed with grief overwhelmed by terror A sense of inadequacy overwhelmed me. overwhelmed with guilt Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/overwhelm "Overwhelm means 'give a person too much of something.' If your friend agrees to feed your pet fish while you’re on vacation, don’t overwhelm her with requests by also asking her to do your laundry and wash the dishes. While it’s easy to be overwhelmed by chores or complaints, it’s also possible to be overwhelmed by good things — if they occur in large quantities. You might enjoy a stack of pancakes for breakfast, but you'd probably find a truckload of pancakes overwhelming. Sometimes people feel overwhelmed by emotion, and this can be a positive or negative experience, depending on the emotion. For example, you might feel overwhelmed by gratitude if your friend takes excellent care of your fish, but overwhelmed with grief if the fish is accidentally flushed in your absence."
