What's meaning of "scorch" is it slang? Darla's neck whipped around searching for the bee, and I straightened out my focus for the rest of the day. The last thing I needed was to be scorched by the likes of Darla Tressler.

'scorched' is a variation of 'burnt'. As slang or as very informal language 'burn' and 'scorch' mean to non-physically sting/nettle/needle/insult someone. He didn't want to be scorched by Dara means he didn't want her to berate/insult/criticise him. Whoever does the 'scorching' is usually upset at that other person. They 'sting' them/'scorch' them/berate/criticise them with words.

I don't know the entire context, but there are a lot of words used as slang to mean something to the effect of embarrass, beaten by, hurt by, shown up by. One of these is "burn." If you someone did something embarrassing or demeaning to you, you could say "They burned you!" "You got a burn!" "BURRNNN!" Since "scorch" literally means the same thing as "burn," I would assume that this usage of "scorch" is a slang meaning the same thing as "burn" in the way I described above.
