They're both correct and express slightly different things. „Ich gehe in die Küche." means that you go into the kitchen (actually entering it). „Ich gehe zur Küche." means that you walk to the kitchen without actually entering it. One might say something like that e.g. in a boarding school as a kid who's not allowed to enter the room, but might want to speak to the chef about dietary requirements.

Clovek's answer is right. 'zu/zur' is as well used with people. Ich fahre zu meiner Oma. Wir sind zur Tante gefahren.

Ich persönlich würde sagen "Ich gehe in die Küche", d.h. du betrittst den Raum. "Ich gehe zur Küche" klingt so, als gingest du nur bis zur Küchentür und nicht in den Raum hinein. Mit Sicherheit gibt es aber auch Dialekte in Deutschland, in denen man "Ich gehe zur Küche" sagt.
