Welcome, I'm Maaike. After years of living abroad (Australia, Portugal, Asia) and working in an NGO, I became a Cambridge CELTA-certified teacher to understand the science of language acquisition. I also hold a Criminology degree.
My core philosophy is simple: Insecurity is the main obstacle to fluency. Anxious brains can't learn! My first goal is to help you feel comfortable saying what you want, so you can connect authentically with the people around you.
I use a speaking-first approach. Many students know the grammar but freeze up when talking to people. We prioritize real communication: expressing feelings, ordering coffee, and blending in. Practical fluency comes first!Che tipo di insegnante sono
° All ages and levels are welcome. I aim to provide a friendly, supportive, and understanding environment for all students, including those who are neurodiverse. I love connecting with people of all backgrounds, and I look forward to hearing your story!
° Mistakes are seen as opportunities for growth and learning.

Maaike is an amazing tutor! She is patient, makes you feel at ease and really takes the time to listen, without judgment, explain and help you out in your journey towards improved fluency :) I truly recommend her classes!

Maaike is an incredible teacher and always makes me feel welcome in her classroom. She is always taking notes during the lesson to create more personalized lessons in the future that match both my interests and language level. She is very supportive and I'm always excited to have another lesson with her!

Another awesome lesson from Maaike! It's really like a conversation between friends instead of a rigid teacher-student interaction - which really suits my style and makes the "lesson" very enjoyable.

Could not recommend Maaike highly enough! She is easy to talk to, LGBTQIA+ friendly, lessons are planned well and enjoyable. I have learnt so much in such a short time.

The teacher is very encouraging and happy. The conversation with the teacher makes me feel really relaxed and encouraged to speak Dutch.

I've had quite some Dutch lessons on italki and Maaike is definitely one of my favourites. She keeps things super interesting, and is very detail oriented, to make you improve. It's always a pleasure talking to her and she adjusts her lesson style to what suits me best.
