Maitri

I've been taking Bengali lessons with Maitri since November. I appreciated the structured approach, which focuses on understanding the grammar and language structure. I preferred to understand the language a little more than just memorising phrases even though my goal wasn't to be super fluent. Maitri's lessons helped me build a strong foundation in Bengali. Maitri's lessons also provided valuable cultural context, which enhanced my learning experience. My goal was to be able to talk to my friend's mother in Kolkata at her wedding. On my flight to Kolkata, I watched three Bengali films and it was a great feeling to be able to pick up some phrases and words. Hi Maitri, I just landed in Kolkata this morning! Thank you so much for your guidance and support. I'm excited to put my new language skills to practice!

Maitri is very patient and thorough. As a heritage speaker, I'm working through gaps in knowledge, and I feel that I am recovering vocabulary quickly. Because my comprehension is much better than speaking, Maitri conducts our lessons in Bangla, which helps me stay focused and take notes in script. I would recommend her lessons to any heritage speakers who have imbalanced listening, speaking, writing, etc. and want to fill in the gaps.

It’s been such a pleasure learning Bengali from Maitri over the last year and a half, I can’t thank her enough for such clear, concise, and flexible lessons! She teaches with authority, but always with kindness and willingness to adjust, each lesson is easy to follow and builds off the last. She’s also willing to share about her culture, food, and country, I feel like I’ve already been to Tripura and India before I’ve even gone!
