I have many years of experience of teaching for examinations such as 11+, 13+, GCSE, A level, Cambridge, Ielts, Toefl, HND, Skills exams. I have four degrees, one is a B.Ed teaching degree and two honour degrees in French, German and Maths. I think 1-on-1 lessons are far more beneficial than other types of lessons. Other lessons may indeed be more fun but you will likely learn less, so, at the end of the day it's a waste of time and money. That's my professional opinion. After teaching for 7-8 years now, there were many demonstrable success stories with students regularly passing various language tests such as EIKEN in Japan or TRKI in Russia.

Learning to Speak, Speaking to Learn Most students I meet on italki look for an online teacher because they want to be able to actually speak French, and not just “learn things about the French language”. My view is that when teaching a language, speaking should always have the highest priority. I know that eventually my students want to learn French to engage in meaningful conversations and enjoy doing it. And I know that for that, they need a pronunciation that people will praise them for, they need to say things the right way (which means using the right grammar and syntax), overall they need to feel confident about their French, and they need a lot of speaking practice.
