Welcome to the American English Pronunciation Guide. My name is Trevor Kafka, and I am your host.

There are many different varieties of American English. I was born and raised in New York, which has given me General American English pronunciation. The English that I speak has 15 vowel sounds.

Today, we will talk about the vowel sound number 2 of 15: /eɪ/ grey day. This vowel is what we call a diphthong, meaning that it’s really two vowel sounds smooshed together as one. The mouth begins very open when the sound begins, but then turns into a smile as the teeth come together.

Vol.3　「そこで」と「それで」

Have you ever been so confused you didn't know what to do or say? If so, you might find these words helpful.

If you're shocked by something, you can say you are "flabbergasted." No one knows where this word comes from, but it might come from "aghast," which means "horrified."

So if you got home and found that everything you own had been stolen, you might say, "I'm flabbergasted that they were able to steal everything without being seen!"

If something is very complicated and confusing, you can say you are "bewildered." This word probably comes from "to wilder," an old word that means "to make someone become lost."

So if the police were not able to find out anything about what happened, they might say, "We're bewildered — we have no idea who took your things."

Another word that could be used is "flummoxed," which also means "confused." People don't know for sure, but it may have come from "flummock," an old word that meant "to make untidy or confuse."

So you could say to the police, "I'm just as flummoxed as you are — I can't understand how they could have stolen everything."

If something is difficult to understand, you can say it's "perplexing," or makes you feel "perplexed." So the police might say, "I'm sorry, but we might not be able to find your things. This is a very perplexing case!"

日本語講師のAikoです。お元気ですか？私はいつも通り、とても元気です！
昨日、日本からベトナムのハノイに来ました。ハノイで１ヶ月暮らす予定です。

今日は、今プレイしているゲーム「ドラゴンクエスト3」の話をしたいと思います。

「ドラゴンクエスト 」とは、日本のゲーム会社「スクウェア・エニックス」によって販売されている、ゲームのシリーズ作品のことです。

日本では「ファイナルファンタジーシリーズ」と並んで、人気で有名なゲームシリーズです。

ゲーマーの間では、「あなたはファイナルファンタジーが好きですか、それともドラゴンクエストが好きですか？」という質問は定番（ていばん）です。

日本では「ドラゴンクエスト」のことを省略（しょうりゃく）して「ドラクエ」と言います。ここからは私も「ドラクエ」と言いますね。

ドラクエのゲームのジャンルは「RPG（アールピージー）」です。RPGとは、ロール プレイング ゲーム という意味です。

ドラクエのシリーズは、現在、「11」まで発売されています。

今私がプレイしているのは「3」です。

「ドラクエ3」は1988年に発売されたとても古いゲームです。

1988年当時は「ファミリーコンピュータ」略して「ファミコン」で発売されました。今私がプレイしているのは、Nintendo Switchのバージョン、Switch版です。

私はドラクエシリーズはだいたいプレイしていますが、特に好きなのが「3」と「5」と「6」です。

ドラクエ3は、仲間の「職業」や「性格」を変えられるシステムがとても面白いです。
パーティー（仲間）は４人で、好きな職業や性格を組み合わせることができます。
私のパーティーには、勇者（ゆうしゃ）と、賢者（けんじゃ）と、戦士（せんし）が二人います。今のレベルは30くらいです。

ドラクエ3は「街（まち）」もとても個性的です。実際の世界と似ていて、ポルトガルやエジプトや日本に似た街が出てきます。今はストーリーの後半で、もう少しでクリアすると思います。

ちなみに、ドラクエの新しいシリーズ「ドラクエ12」は発売予定ですが、いつ発売されるのかまだ分かっていません。うわさでは、「来年、2024年に発売されるかもしれない」と言われています。

If you're doing online dating in the English-speaking world, you might see people talking about their "icks."

This is a slang word — icks are things that give you "a sudden feeling that you dislike someone" or are no longer attracted to them, according to the Cambridge Dictionary.

Icks are not always really big things. Being rude to an employee at a store, for example, might be an ick for someone, or eating with your mouth open.

People will often say they "got the ick" when they noticed something about a person that made them feel they were no longer attracted to them.

If they get to that point, it may be hard for them to feel attracted again!

If you're looking through dating profiles on an app, the most common ick is people who are negative or bitter.

That's according to a survey for Forbes Health. One thousand Americans who had used a dating app in the last year were asked about their dating habits.

And about 70% said people who are negative or bitter in their bios, perhaps about a previous relationship, give them the ick.

Other common icks include people with edited photos, people who are too interested in their possessions, and people with bad spelling or grammar.

And when using the apps, daters often make their decisions quite quickly.

According to the survey, the average person takes about two-and-a-half minutes to make a decision about whether they like a person or not.

So what makes daters attractive to others? Having a profile that shows a good sense of humor is a good thing, according to 80% of people.

The same number said they like people who have hobbies and interests, while many others like people who are interested in travel — or who show a pet in their photo!
