In this introductory episode, I’ll explain how this podcast will go beyond dictionary definitions and challenge the idea that two words can actually have exactly the same meaning.

I’m your host Emma, an Italki teacher with four years’ experience in editing and teaching writing skills. I’m bringing my passion for the intricacies of the English language to this podcast, where I’ll explain the subtle, pragmatic differences between a pair of synonyms each week. 

This might mean, for example, that one of the two words is more formal than the other, or creates more of a negative meaning, or has specific connotations that mean it’s only suitable for a certain topic, or level, or audience.

So, when you’re writing your next email, chapter, letter, or essay, you can feel confident that you’re choosing the perfect word for the situation.

N이/가 있어요 means that N is located or exists,
while N이/가 없어요 means the opposite.
N에 is used with N이/가 있어요 to show where N is located.

В   воскресенье   мы   с   друзьями   ходили   в   русский   ресторан,   который находится недалеко от станции метро «Гостиный Двор». Мы   сидели   около   окна.   В   зале   было   очень   красиво,   светло,   тепло,  уютно.  Официант  был  вежливый.  Он  дал  нам  меню.  Мы  читали  меню,  но  блюда  были  незнакомые,  поэтому  мы  спросили  официанта:
— Что вы рекомендуете нам заказать?
— Я рекомендую борщ и пельмени. Это национальные русские блюда. Есть ещё вкусные блины.
— А с чем блины?
— Есть блины с вареньем. Есть со сметаной.
— А что такое борщ?
— Это такой суп.
— А какое мороженое вы нам рекомендуете?
— Есть очень вкусное шоколадное мороженое.
   Мы  заказали  блины  (3  порции),  зелёный  чай  и  мороженое.  Всё было очень вкусно. Мы весело провели время. Все рестораны в Санкт-Петербурге разные, но везде готовят очень вкусно.

こんにちは、Japanese with Yoshikoへようこそ！皆さん、お元気ですか？日本は秋になってお出かけするのが楽しくなるような気候になりました。今日は、「運動会」について話したいと思います。本日のフレーズは「定着する」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

日本では秋といえば、「食欲の秋」「読書の秋」「紅葉の秋」「行楽の秋」「音楽の秋」「睡眠の秋」「芸術の秋」「スポーツの秋」と言われています。快適なシーズンだから、秋になるとなんでもしたくなりますね。笑　この「〇〇の秋」というのは秋しか言わないのです。春も似たような気候ですが、春は新学期が始まり、ドタバタして余裕がないので、落ち着いて気候が良くなる秋について〇〇の秋と表現します。今日はこの中でもスポーツの秋と運動会についてお話しします。

秋=スポーツというイメージを定着させたのは、1964年に開催された東京オリンピックだったと言われています。10月10日に開会式が開催され、2年後に10月10日は「体育の日」として制定されました。2000年からは10月の第2月曜日になり、3連休が取れるようになりました。2020年からは「スポーツの日」という名前に変わりました。ちなみに「スポーツの日」になったというのをこのポッドキャストを作っているときに知りました。

運動会という言葉を聞いたことがありますか。英語でいうとsports dayですね。地域差がありますが、秋または春に開催されます。小学校や中学校、また会社や地域のコミュニティーでも行うことがあります。短距離走や、リレー、玉入れ、綱引き、騎馬戦、障害物競走などが有名な競技です。私の小学校と中学校では縦割りクラスで赤組、青組、白組、緑組、黄色組などのチーム分けをし、得点を競い、最高学年の5,6人の生徒が応援団をしました。この応援が本当に楽しいんです。運動会の応援団に入りたい人もたくさんいました。私は足が速いほうだったので、何度かクラス対抗リレーに出ました。今はコロナなのでわかりませんが、家族も見に来ることができます。

2週間前に、息子の幼稚園でも運動会がありました。幼稚園の運動会は結構違って、本当にかわいらしいです。今年は障害物競走、シャボン玉かけっこなどに出て、最後にカレー体操を踊りました。去年は障害物競走の最後になぜか号泣、ダンスもあまり踊らなかったけど、今年は全然違った姿が見れました。カレー体操は、カレーを作るダンスなんですが、本当に本当にかわいくて涙が出てきました。この日のことは一生忘れません。

みなさんは、秋といえば何ですか。今日のフレーズは「定着する」でしたね。主に2つ意味があります。1つ目は「ある場所や位置に、ぴったりとつくこと。一定の所に落ち着くこと。」2つ目は「しっかりと根づくこと。人々の間に浸透し、なじむこと。」です。例文です。「ここ数年、異常に離職率が高いですね。スタッフの定着率をあげるにはどうすればいいのだろう。」「最近はググるよりも、youtubeで検索するのが若者の間で定着しているようだ。」それでは、またバイバーイ。

第12回：スポーツの秋～運動会～　Fall is the best season for sports~sports day~

Hay un experimento clásico que pone a un voluntario en el dilema de decidir qué hacer con un vagón que avanza descontrolado hacia cinco trabajadores que no pueden verlo. El voluntario observa la escena desde lo alto de un puente junto a otra persona. Si empuja a esta persona a las vías, morirá, pero detendrá el vagón y salvará cinco vidas. Cuando el experimento se realiza con personas que hablan dos idiomas y responden en su lengua materna, el veinte por ciento decide que sacrificar a una persona es aceptable para salvar a cinco. Cuando responden en su segundo idioma, la cifra sube al treinta y tres por ciento. El efecto se explica porque, cuando se habla una lengua extranjera, normalmente tomamos decisiones menos emocionales y más pragmáticas.
