こんにちは、Japanese with Yoshikoへようこそ！皆さん、お元気ですか？今日は、「学校の先生とクラス」について話したいと思います。本日のフレーズは「拍車をかける」です。意味を知らない人はどういう意味か想像しながら聞いてみてくださいね。

なぜ今回このトピックにしたかというと、サウジアラビア人の夫に「日本の教育・学校生活で面白いと思うことは何？」と聞いたら、「クラスの先生がいること」というのが回答の一つとしてあがりました。そうなんです。日本にはほとんどの小学校から高校まで、クラスの先生、つまりクラス担任がいます。そして学校の先生の役割やクラスという概念が他の国とは異なり、面白いと思ったので、今から詳しく説明しますね。

基本的に小学校では、クラス担任が一人いて、理科や英語、美術、音楽などの特別な教科を除き、ほとんどの教科を教えます。中学校・高校では担任一人、副担任一人の二名体制となります。中学からは先生一人が一つの教科を教えます。
小学校から高校まで、理科や音楽、美術、体育などの特別な教科以外は自分のクラスで授業を受けます。先生が教室に移動します。そのため、自分の持ち物は自分の教室のロッカーや机に保管します。朝は８時半ごろに授業が始まります。その前に担任の先生から、お知らせを聞きます。教室で給食をみんなで一緒に食べ、みんなで掃除をし、最後の授業の後にまた担任の先生からお話があります。学習相談や進路相談も担任の先生にします。副担任の先生が登場することは滅多にありません。
運動会や球技大会、文化祭などの各種イベントもクラス毎に競ったり、企画したりするので、「クラスへの所属感」というのが、違うクラスシステムを取っている他国の生徒よりあるのではないかと思います。そのため、毎年4月に発表されるクラス割はとても重要です。メインの先生は一人だし、学校生活の90%を同じクラスメートと過ごすからです。
ここまでで少しお気づきだと思いますが、日本の先生は大変です。特にクラス担任の負担は大きいです。ここで先生の負担に拍車をかけているのが、中学、高校の部活動です。部活動とは、放課後に学校でするスポーツ活動や文化活動で、中学校1年生の時には、ほぼ100%の生徒が所属すると思います。基本的にすべての先生が一つの部活の責任者となります。一つの部活に対して２人の先生がいる場合がありますが、大きな部活を除いて、メインの先生一人が指導します。中学や高校では授業が3-4時台に終わり、それから部活動が始まります。普通は2-3時間活動し、高校の強豪チームともなるともっと長い時間練習します。土日や夏休みなどの長期休暇中も練習があり、もちろん先生も来ます。部活をメインで指導する先生は、あまり休みが取れず、残業も多いです。しかし、部活を教えたくて教師になる人もいるんですよ。

どうでしたか？みなさんの国の先生の役割やクラスの概念とはかなり違ったかもしれないですね。オランダでは、ワークシェアリングが一般的で、クラス担任も曜日によって変わる学校もあるみたいです。クラス担任が二人いることで、先生との相性が合わないから学校に行きたくないといったことが減ったり、違う目線から生徒を見たり、評価したりできるのは良いと思います。本日のフレーズは「拍車をかける」でしたね。意味は、「物事の進行を一段と早めること」です。「拍車がかかる」も同じ意味でよく使われます。例文です。「SNSでの宣伝が新商品の人気に拍車をかけた。」「コロナの流行で、会社の経営悪化に拍車がかかった。」それではまた、バイバーイ。

Some companies have a very formal job interview process run by dedicated HR professionals, who strive to find the best educated and experienced people, while others have more informal recruitment processes and are more interested in your personal qualities and attributes, rather than technical skills and knowledge.

In most cases, however, you are more likely to experience a mix of both formal and informal approaches to job interviews.

Hello. This my podcast episode 31. These days I have the air-conditioner on almost all day long. I've lost my appetite and I'm eating Somen noodles and cucumbers. I've been busy this month with a lot of different things. Recently I have been trying to learn more about work and languages, and there are many books I want to read, but I can't find the time to read them. I want to read a book by Benjamin Franklin because I recently heard a student talk about 'opportunity cost' in a lesson and it was interesting.

先週ウェビナーが終わりました。ライブ時はコメントや質問がほとんどなかったのですが、実はライブが終わってから数分後に、たくさんのコメントや質問が一斉に送られてきていました。日本では、質問の時間は、最初の一人が質問するまで、まったく質問がない、沈黙の時間があるのが普通です。ところが英語圏では、どんどん質問が飛び出すのが普通です。

The webinar finished last week. There were very few comments and questions during the live session, but in fact, a few minutes after the live session was over, many comments and questions were sent in all at once. In Japan, there is usually a period of silence, with no questions at all, until the first person asks a question. In English-speaking countries, however, it is normal for questions to keep popping up.

当日裏方でウェビナーの操作をしていたitalkiの方は、英語のウェビナーの雰囲気に慣れていました。沈黙が続いたとき、質問がないと思って、私に気を使ってくれて、質問コーナーを早く打ち切りました。こういうところでも文化的な理解の違いがあるんですね。この違いに気づかなかったのは、私の経験不足です。もしまたウェビナーのホストをする機会があったら、この点を改善したいと思います。
