Today's topic is, how to be more confident when speaking in meetings.

Some of you might know this already but my full time job is working with non native English speakers, one to one, on video calls to improve their confidence and ability when using English at work. And the number one thing that people tell me they need to improve is their confidence in meetings! How can I become more confident in meetings, how can I express my ideas better, how can I make my meetings easier. This is what we’re going to discuss today. 

For non-native English speakers, speaking in meetings can be a challenging and daunting task. Whether you’re presenting in front of a large group or just participating in a small discussion, it can be difficult to feel confident in your ability to express yourself. However, with a few simple tips, you can start speaking more confidently in meetings sooner rather than later.

At the same time, we’re going to look at some useful vocabulary and sentence structures that we can use to do this. So if you want to grab a pen to take some notes, feel free, and let’s get started.

Oh, and right at the end we’ll review a couple of the more interesting pieces of vocabulary I’ve included in today’s podcast.

EL SOMBRERO CHARRO.

El sombrero charro fue parte del estereotipo del nacionalismo mexicano del siglo XX. El charro fue un pintoresco representante del folclor de México que se convirtió –y con ello, su característico atuendo– en un personaje mítico y que más tarde daría un salto a la industria cinematográfica para conocer la fama. Quizá su origen no tenga tanta relevancia como su trascendencia cultural, pero no es casualidad que ahí, como parte de ese universo simbólico, su sombrero se consolidara también como un señuelo de la identidad mexicana.

Una aproximación hacia el origen del sombrero charro nos exige adentrarnos en el mundo de significaciones que vieron nacer al mítico personaje del charro mexicano. Porque si algo nos debe quedar claro es que la construcción simbólica de este encuentra su apogeo en la Época de Oro del cine mexicano –aunque desde muchos años atrás ya se concebía– y en donde su original vestimenta es el sello indiscutible de lo mexicano. Sí, el charro se constituyó a través de los valores ideológicos de la época apelando a los sentimientos más que la razón. Por esos tiempos, el cine volvió algo idiosincrásico: aquella chaqueta bordada, corta y entallada, a ese pantalón ajustado y ese enorme sombrero jarano de ala ancha.

El discurso nacionalista que se esparcía después de la Revolución Mexicana propició diversas transformaciones en nuestro país. La aproximación más cercana al nacimiento del charro no se da en este periodo sino mucho antes; con el ranchero y el jinete –aunque algunos historiadores sugieren a los chinacos como una figura predecesora–. Pero, el jinete se refería más que nada al hombre de campo, aquel que peleó junto con Emiliano Zapata en la Revolución Mexicana.

今日の天気は曇り。
気温は22℃。

北海道はどんどん涼しくなっています。
みなさんが住んでいる地域はどうですか？

さて、今日はアレルギーについて。
私はアレルギー性の鼻炎があります。
花粉やハウスダストにアレルギーがあります。
季節の変わり目にも、アレルギーの症状がよく出ます。
くしゃみや鼻水が出る症状になります。
ひどい時は、くしゃみが止まらなくなる時もあります。

この症状をおさえるために、薬を飲むことが多いです。
薬を飲むと、1時間後ぐらいにはほとんど症状がおさまります。マスクをしていても症状は出るので、薬でコントロールすることが多いです。

ここ数日はアレルギーの症状が出ています。
最近、あまり出ていなかったので、少し油断していました。
北海道の何かか、季節の変わり目だからか理由はわかりませんが、アレルギーの症状が出ています。

症状がおさまらないと、集中できないので良くないですね。
早くおさまってほしいです。
