Does it sound weird? Did I not mention it's actually a Spanish language expression? There are many ways of incorporating animals to express yourself in Spanish. Why animals, you ask? Well, why not?

People and animals have always had a close relationship, one that has been present throughout history. This relationship has been so important that it has also seeped into our language. In fact, all languages around the world contain a variety of expressions related to animals, especially to animals that have been, and are still, close to people.
&nbsp;
It is believed that many of these expressions come from Ancient Greece and that over the years, they have been transmitted through both spoken and written language. Specifically, &nbsp;it was Aesop, the famous Greek writer and storyteller, who created many of the animal-related expressions that are found in various different languages today.
&nbsp;
<a title="Learn Spanish with italki!" href="https://www.italki.com/teachers/spanish" target="_blank">Spanish</a>, however, may not be the language with the most idiomatic expressions related to animals. In fact, according to research, Spanish has only 86 animal-related idiomatic expressions, while German has up to 206! However, as you you may have noticed in my previous article about expressions related to food, Spanish speakers use such expressions constantly. 
&nbsp;
Once again, as a native Spanish speaker, I can assure you that learning and being able to use and understand these kinds of expressions can be the difference between a basic Spanish student and a person who is truly fluent in the Spanish language and culture. Even though they are very old expressions, you can be sure that you will be able find them in texts and books.
&nbsp;
So here&rsquo;s a look at twenty idiomatic expressions related to animals that you may not have learned at school or at an academy. In each case, you will learn the expression in Spanish, as well as an explanation (in Spanish and in English) and an example for each. Links to pictures of each animal are included so it will be easier to identify them!

<h2>Estar como una cabra</h2>

Always used in the feminine form (una cabra) whether you are speaking about a man or a woman.

As you have seen, some of these can be used as a compliment and will be appreciated by any person you talk to. Others, however, are almost an insult and will not be well received by your conversational partner. So, think twice before using them!

As is true of other Mediterranean countries such as Italy and Greece, Spanish culture is quite often based on food, and most of our social activities are related to food. It is a common joke to say that it is impossible to have a social life while fasting since most Spanish meetings with friends and family are conducted around a table full of food and drinks.

Many anthropologists and linguistic experts realize how important culture is when we talk about a language. For that reason, we know why Eskimos have so many words to define &ldquo;snow&rdquo; (falling snow, snow on the floor, melting snow&hellip;) or why Galicians (people from Galicia, the most rainy region in Spain) have around seventy words related to &ldquo;rain.&rdquo; This probably also explains why Spanish people have so many idiomatic expressions based on food.

However, beyond this academic explanation, it is quite important to learn and to be aware of these expressions because it can make the difference between a native level speaker (or a well immersed foreigner) and a person who only can speak <a title="Learn Spanish with italki!" href="http://www.italki.com/learn-spanish/en-us" target="_blank">Spanish</a> because he or she can conjugate and use the subjunctive tense. I do not want you to misinterpret my previous comment: grammar is an essential part of learning a new language. However, it is also something that you can get from any grammar book.

Here, you will find fifteen idiomatic expressions related to food that you may not learn at school or at an academy. In each case, you will learn the expression in Spanish and its direct translation in English. The English translation only serves the purpose of identifying the food in the sentence. Take note that most of these are very common in spoken Spanish, and you may hear them more than you would expect if you visit Spain. Of course, you might also find them in written texts.
