Academic Writing

Hi, my name is Hilary and I can help you prepare for TOEFL iBT Speaking. I’ve worked for TEN YEARS as a rater for TOEFL Speaking. In those ten years, I’ve heard literally thousands and thousands of test-takers answering hundreds of questions. I know this test inside and out. I know what test-takers should say and what they shouldn’t say. And unfortunately, I’ve learned that many test-takers either aren’t prepared for the test or they’ve prepared the wrong way. Either way, they end up with a lower speaking score than they should.

Many teachers and websites just GUESS what's on the test, how raters evaluate responses, and which way you should answer questions to get the best score. But guessing isn't good enough. I KNOW how you should answer these questions.

I highly recommend that you take at least five lessons with me if you really want to improve your score. I can give you a deeper understanding of the test, explain how you should answer each question, and dispel any misunderstandings you may have about TOEFL iBT Speaking. TOEFL iBT Writing

Most STUDENTS are looking for help in preparation for Academic IELTS to study abroad. Speaking practise is the most popular. Classes are for any young student, aged 3 - 18 years old. My Young Student’s classes are STUDENT-CENTRED, tailored to your child to ensure they are FUN, ENJOYABLE and INTERESTING at the APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF ABILITY, boosting their MOTIVATION to learn. 
Classes usually start out with conversation (speaking and listening) using questions matched to their level of comprehension, to explore their range of ability. I might incorporate singing and story reading if they are younger. 
I like to introduce reading with PHONICS as soon as possible using the Oxford Reading Tree Songbirds series to develop their pronunciation and vocabulary. 
For students with strong basic reading skills, we can explore reading material that matches their ability with their interests. 
Writing exercises are excellent for homework and later review in class, to develop spelling and grammar.

Teaching various English courses including conversation, reading, writing, listening and speaking, from basic through to advanced levels, as well as specialty courses including Exam Preparation (GAT), Business English, Hotel English, Restaurant English, English for Tourism and Public Speaking. Also taught and tutored students from this school online using Skype.

Responsible for teaching 4-5 English classes a day in classes of 30 to 40 students, primarily teaching primary grades 1 and 2 but also teaching kindergarten and upper levels of primary as required. I also taught Thai teachers in an English language education program. *Before your book this class, you should have at least 1 MONTH before you plan to take the exam. If you have less than one month, I recommend booking a more intensive 45 minute or 1 hour class as that will be better suited to your needs.*

In this lesson you will receive an IELTS Consultation with a modified *Speaking test and Feedback about your level. You will also receive a personalized IELTS Written Report to help guide your study. 

During the Consultation we will:
- Discuss your plans for IELTS
- Conduct a modified mock-speaking test to assess your speaking level. *
- Discuss your strengths and weaknesses according to the band descriptors.
- Provide you with a written report so you know what areas to work on. (This will be sent to you after)

*Due to time constraints, the modified speaking test will not be the full test. Please avoid using this trial lesson as a substitute for pre-exam test practice. This lesson is best for those who take the test in 30 days or more.

IELTS Writing

This lesson is perfect for anyone who is planning to take the test soon and would like some additional test practice.

This is a full speaking test with an authentic testing experience. All times, procedures and questions will be as if you're taking the actual exam with an examiner.

After the test, you will receive feedback that will show you your estimated band score.

We will cover one full test in the 45-minute lesson. The hour lesson will allow for two full speaking tests + feedback.

Reading Workshop

We were require to teach for just under five hours, attend a number of theoretical and demo classes. We also had to write a number of essays and asses other teachers teaching.

It helped me to understand teaching practice and hone my teaching skills

Taught college students English. The class sizes were quite big ranging from 30 to 55 students.

Most of the students who I taught were actually studying to become English teachers themselves.

Taught high school children. Class sizes were rather small ranging from about ten to one. As well as teaching students IGCSE and general English, I taught IELTS preparation classes.

I taught Business English to college students as well as general English and IELTS preparation classes.

I taught foreign factory workers general English for practical use as well as test preparation. I did the work on a contractual basis in Lincolnshire.

I taught foreign warehouse operatives English for both practical use and for test preparation. I did this job on a contractual basis in Lincolnshire.

I will assess your level in our trial lesson and I will choose a book that suits your needs. Lessons for Children

I have a lot of experience in helping people prepare for IELTS. My lessons primarily focus on the Speaking and Writing parts of the test but I can also help you prepare for Listening and Reading if required. The material I use in this course is made up of a slideshow based lesson plan which has been specifically designed to help you prepare for the IELTS test. 

 Throughout the course we will also practice many current IELTS speaking questions to aid your development of the necessary skills and confidence to excel in the exam.

 Homework would be assigned after each lesson allowing you to complete a current IELTS writing test question which would be marked before the next class.

I have helped over 100 students prepare for the IELTS test, all of whom have made improvements in their English, many have improved their overall scores by 0.5-1.0, some have reached an overall score of 8.5.

IELTS Speaking/Writing/Listening/Reading Preparation

Do you need to take PTE or TOEFL or TOEIC  exams? I have a lot of experience and success in helping students and professionals do that.

In this course I will help you prepare for all parts of the exam you plan to take, resources and materials will be provided and the lessons will be tailored to you individual needs.

 After each class, homework for the writing part of the test will be assigned. I will check and correct the homework and we will discuss your written work in each following class.

Typically though, this course will involve the use of written, audio, video, and visual material to help you develop each of the four core skills: writing, reading, listening, and speaking.

In addition, we will of course work on vocabulary, pronunciation, sounding natural, and so on.

I recommend to everyone that they book a trial lesson first to discuss your needs and see whether we are a good fit and can work well together. It takes time to make progress and it is important to know that we get on with each other if we are going to spend 10, 20, 30+ hours together!

The General English Course includes the use of exercises, grammar explanations, etc - it is a traditional English lesson. 

The Business/Exam/Academic Course involves specialist practice for specific purposes.

The main focus of the conversation practice course is to build your confidence speaking English: you already have a lot of knowledge, you just need to practice using it!
