Hi, and welcome back to Everyday English with Teacher Alyse! Today we are learning useful expressions for showing interest. These expressions help you respond when someone tells you good news, bad news, or just information. Let’s practice together.
Part 1: Good News
When you hear good news, you can say:
•	Wow!
•	Amazing!
•	Really?
Example 1:
“My team won the game!”
→ “Wow! That’s amazing!”
Example 2:
“I passed my English test!”
→ “Really? Amazing!”
Part 2: Bad News
When you hear bad news, you can say:
•	Oh, no!
•	That’s terrible.
•	No way!
Example 1:
“My phone broke yesterday.”
→ “Oh, no! That’s terrible.”
Example 2:
“I lost my wallet.”
→ “No way! That’s terrible.”
Part 3: Neutral Information
When the news is not good or bad, just information, you can say:
•	I see.
•	Interesting.
•	Really?
Example 1:
“I have math class every Monday.”
→ “I see.” / “Interesting.”
Example 2:
“I usually wake up at 6 a.m.”
→ “Really? Interesting.”

How to Talk About Your Weekend

Hi, and welcome back to Everyday English with Teacher Alyse! I’m so happy you’re here. Today, we’re going to talk about a small but powerful change you can make in your daily conversations—replacing the word sorry with thank you.
Many English learners, and even native speakers, use "sorry" too often. While saying sorry is important when you truly make a mistake, overusing it can make you seem less confident and even unnecessary in some situations. Instead, shifting to thank you can make your communication more positive and empowering.
Let’s go through some common situations where you might be tempted to say "sorry" and how to rephrase them in a more confident and appreciative way.
Instead of saying: “I’m sorry I’m late.”
➝ Say: “Thank you for waiting for me.”
→ Why? This shift acknowledges the other person’s patience rather than focusing on your mistake. It creates a more positive tone.

Why Is It Important to Limit "Sorry"?
Using "sorry" too often can make you seem less confident and even weaken your message. It can also make an issue seem bigger than it actually is. Of course, when you truly make a mistake, a sincere apology is important. But by replacing unnecessary "sorrys" with "thank yous," you turn negative situations into positive interactions.

Replace "Sorry" with "Thank You"

Hi everyone, and welcome back to Everyday English. Today’s episode is about personality. Are you more of an extrovert or an introvert? Or maybe you’re somewhere in between? Let’s find out!
Extroverts love socializing, meeting new people, and feel energized in busy environments. They enjoy group activities, thrive in social situations, and often express their thoughts openly. If you love parties, speaking in front of a crowd, and you make new friends easily, you might be an extrovert!
Introverts, on the other hand, prefer quiet time, deep conversations, and need space to recharge after socializing. They often enjoy reading, writing, or creative hobbies alone. If you feel drained after large social events and enjoy spending time in peaceful settings, you might be an introvert.
But here’s a fun fact—many people aren’t fully one or the other! Ambiverts have a mix of both traits. They can enjoy social events but also need alone time to recharge. If you like going out sometimes but also love staying home, you might be an ambivert! 
I think I’m more of an introvert—I love spending time in my garden and with my cats. What about you? Do you relate more to introverts or extroverts? Or are you somewhere in between?

Useful language when expressing agreement and disagreement.

Agreeing with a positive statement
Me too.
So do / am / can I.

Agreeing with a negative statement
Me neither.
Neither do / am / can I.

Disagreeing with a positive statement
Really? Not me.
I don’t /can’t
I’m not

Disagreeing with a negative statement
Really? I do / am / can.

For example:
I live in apartment in the city. So, do I.

I’m so sleepy. So am I.
I love cheese. Me too!
I really don’t like mushrooms. Neither do I.

Think of a situation where someone wanted to give you feedback on something you did. How did they do it? How did you feel? 

Giving positive feedback
I really like the way you __________.
I must say you're so good at ___________.
I've heard so many people saying such good things about ________.

Showing positive intention
I have some thoughts that might be useful.
I have some ideas that might help if you'd like to hear them.
I'm saying this because I'd like to support you.

Giving clear developmental feedback

How to manage group conversations

Managing group conversations

The people you meet might respond to uncertainty differently than you. Consider seeing things from their point of view and adapting a little. Listen to this story of Nicole and Susan. 

Nicole likes routines and likes to plan in advance. Every Sunday she spends the afternoon and evening at her parents’ house. Every Monday she meets her best friend for lunch and every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings she goes to a café and reads. Having some control over what’s going to happen makes her feel safe. Then one day Nicole meets Susan. Susan never plans things in advance, is always late, and prefers to be flexible. She likes to make decisions based on how she’s feeling that day and feels that doing the same thing is limiting. Nicole tried to make plans to meet for coffee in advance, Susan sounds uninterested, but she never gives her definite answers. Her behavior really annoys Nicole. 

With people who don’t mind uncertainty …

Remember that you can learn a lot from the unknown and the unfamiliar.
Show flexibility.
For example:
For me, either way is fine.
Let me know what you’re comfortable with.


With people who avoid uncertainty …

Offer details when making decisions.
Provide a context with background information. 
For example:
The reason I do it this way is…
Let me explain why (I’m doing this).

Show you understand the importance of structure and plans. 
I understand the (structure/flexibility) is important / means a lot to you.
I can see why you (spend time on planning).
