MÉXICO TENOCHTITLÁN.

Durante sus primeras décadas de presencia en el Valle de México, los mexicas no tuvieron un asentamiento fijo por su condición de extranjeros y por conflictos internos. La leyenda cuenta que los mexicas sacrificaron a la hija de un señor de Culhuacán y esto provocó su exilio en unas pequeñas islas situadas en una región pantanosa del lago Texcoco. En 1325 fundarían Tenochtitlán (“lugar donde abundan los nopales o tunas sobre piedra”) en un lugar donde –según la leyenda- su dios Huitzilopochtli, transformado en águila, les revelaría el fin de su migración.

Al igual que Teotihuacán, la ciudad de México-Tenochtitlán había sido cuidadosamente planeada y construida de acuerdo con principios políticos, religiosos, militares y funcionales. Tenochtitlán cubría un área de más de 7 km2 (se estima hasta 12 km2) y tenía en su apogeo alrededor de 150 mil habitantes.

El centro ceremonial estaba dominado por el Templo Mayor, una pirámide con dos templos gemelos dedicados a los dioses Tláloc y Huitzilopochtli y que, para los mexicas, representaba el Coatépetl, la montaña sagrada, que almacenaba la lluvia, los rayos y las semillas multiplicadoras de la vida. El templo era considerado el centro del universo, la morada de los dioses y el lugar por excelencia en que los hombres podían descender a los nueve niveles del inframundo o ascender a los 13 niveles de los cielos.
