The phrase is actually "paying your dues". There are many ways to describe what this means but here is my explanation. It means that life doesn't simply hand you wonderful things and great accomplishments - you must work hard for them.

The actual phrase is "paying your dues". Dues, literally, is money paid to be a member of some organization. In this idiom, it means making the sacrifices necessary to achieve your goal, or goals. Usually, it is a cliche said by musicians who achieve fame. They will say that they achieved fame by paying their dues - spending years playing in small bars and theaters for very little money. In business, if a successful business man talks about having paid his dues, it means that he spent a long time at lesser jobs to climb to his present position.

你可能寫錯了,是 paying your dues. 意思就是說,你要達到什麼目標,就需要捨去什麼,還是付出什麼代價。 "What? You're going to give up eating burgers? Just to lose weight?" "Yea, well you know that I love McD's. But I've got to pay my dues, you know?" “啊,你要放棄吃漢堡? 光是為了減肥?” “對啊,哎呀,你也知道我超喜歡吃麥當勞。 但是要減肥,也不能毫無代價地減吧。”
