Genki-example.....does the sentece sound unnatural? nanji goro okimasuka hachiji goro okimasu- This sounds so unnatural O-o You woudn`t answer that question in englsih by saying : I go to bed at about 11`clock. You`d say: At about 11 (o`clock) So do Japanese people actually talk like this?

1. "okimasu" is to wake up not go to sleep 2. If someone asked you "What time do you get up?," it would be perfectly natural to say "I get up at about 8" so I don't know why you make it seem like something only weird people would say. The truncation to "At about 8" is not natural in Japanese because saying "hachi ji goro" by itself is very vague: it can mean the time of day or a length of time. It also doesn't sound very nice, so people might think your response is curt.

Hi Angela, I'm Japanese and I agree with ibuki-san. We say "at about (time)" very, very often in everyday conversation. For us, at least for me, "to get up at 8:00" means "just at 8 o'clock". If I get up sometimes, for example at 7:55, 7:58, 8:03, 8:05...it's "about at 8:00 (hachiji goro)" so it sounds very natural for us. I hope you understand our way of say it.

I think you misunderstood my comment. I was saying that dropping the おきます is not an option. i understand that 八時頃起きます sounds as natural to japanese people as "at about eight" does in english
